About R. Scott Alexander
I was hired as English horn soloist/2nd oboist in 1985 by the US Navy Band, Washington DC where I eventually became Principal oboist. As a pianist, organist and woodwind specialist, I performed on many instruments for 24 years, 10 months. Originally from Tennessee, I retired in Oregon to be near my parents who had relocated.
What do you enjoy the most about playing?
I enjoy the camaraderie with other good musicians and performing gives me a sense of accomplishment. It also enhances emotions.
Do you have a favorite musical memory?
When I was Principal Flutist with the US Navy Band Harp/Flute Duo, we performed in the White House Private Quarters for the celebration of the signing of the first Mideast Peace Treaty in the early '90s. After all the guests departed for the next event, we were left performing for 4 Presidents alone. (Ford, Reagan, Clinton, and Carter) After a movement from a Persichetti piece, President Carter asked us to repeat it. I've always remembered this as a "Command Performance" requested by my favorite President. That was an unparalleled experience.
