Program Highlights:
The Wreckers - A Dramatic Overture and On the Cliffs of Cornwall, a Dramatic Prelude by Ethel Smyth: We'll start the program with the overture to Dame Ethel Smyth's timeless opera, "The Wreckers," setting the stage for an afternoon of musical adventure. Be carried away to the cliffs of Cornwall as the "Prelude to Act 2," where the locals lure ships and their crews to death and destruction on their rugged coastline. Murder, love, and ethical compromise – what better inspiration for dramatic music written by a masterful woman composer?
Sea Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams: Feel the wind in your hair and the ocean spray as we present the maritime quick march, Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Sea Songs." You'll be sailing through sea chanties that are both bold and beautiful.
Danish Folk Music Settings by Percy Grainger: Immerse yourself in Denmark's rich, folkloric traditions with the spirited and charming settings by Percy Grainger. These tunes will transport you to the picturesque landscapes of Scandinavia and music that tells tales sure to surprise all listeners.
Through an Open Door by Nathan Daughtery: Experience a lush musical setting of Dvořák's "Goin' Home" with Nathan Daughtery's "Through an Open Door." This modern interpretation will give you a fresh perspective on a beloved classic.
Symphonic Variations Gil Blas by Jules Strens: Inspired by the coming-of-age adventures of Gil Blas in Spain, Jules Strens' "Gil Blas Symphonic Variations " takes you on an exotic musical journey inspired by the classic novel by Alain-René Lesage.

All That’s Jazz with Salem Symphonic Winds:
Sunday, January 28, 2024 3 PM
Join the Salem Symphonic Winds, for an afternoon of jazz-inspired music that will delight your ears and move your feet. The soloist for this work is Randy Kem, a talented and versatile musician who has performed with many local and national ensembles. You will also enjoy other works that explore the rich and diverse world of jazz, including Melodious Thunk by David Biedenbender, a homage to the piano playing of Thelonious Monk; Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli, a tribute to the blues genre; and Cats Tales by Peter Graham, an entertaining suite of five movements that depict different aspects of New York City’s jazz scene. We will close the show with an arrangement by Ira Hearshen of Strike Up the Band, music by George Gershwin as you have never heard it before!
